With the economy pushing our budget to the limits and beyond and playing the waiting game to hear back from employers or recruiters we can’t just sit around and wait for an email or the cell phone to ring. Nope. We need to get creative, think outside of the box, figure out a way to make some extra money and perhaps grow it into a full time business.
Just like these folks did. As you read these ideas, I hope your creative wheels will start to spin. That you’ll stop and think about your skills, special talents, or experience you have and say hey, with my talent in such and such, I can promote it here and there, and it’s at that moment when your own business is born!
Here are some great examples:
Cooking & Baking
Is there a special dish that everyone raves about or asks you to take when you have a potluck get-together? When I worked at a call center, there was a rep that would sell Chicken Flautas and served it with homemade salsa. OH MY GOODNESS! Let’s do some math: he’d make about 20 plates sell them for $5. That’s $100 a day and not bad!
Do you get “volunteered” to bring desserts? If you have a passion for baking, like my sister’s mother-in-law Martha, who bakes some awesome cakes for any occasion, you can do it right out of your own oven like she does. Now we’re not talking your regular icing and little decorations, no, she can really get down on those cakes, let me tell you! Wedding cakes or any specially-themed cakes, she has really made a name for herself. You tell her what you’d like and she can make it happen!!
Maryann Stevenson, founder of Darling Accessories has said her custom hair accessory biz, although not replacing her main stream of income has generated some revenue. More importantly, she’s made a name for herself and her custom hair accessory line. She takes her skill of painting and puts is on a custom bow or other hair accessory…she doesn’t just get stuff and glue them together, she customizes each accessory with its own style. I’ve posted a pic here for you to see and if you’re interested in Darling Accessories, click here to get to her Facebook Page
What’s The Key To Success?
I’m sure everyone has their own opinion but there is a couple shared by many, for starters is the passion. You have to love what you do otherwise it’ll be just another job. The other thing? Don’t go in with expectations of becoming a millionaire overnight, although that would be a sweet surprise. It’s going to take time, hard work, and plenty of dedication.
These are great examples of how resilient people are when it comes to making money and how thinking outside the box and using your skills can really make your dream of being a business owner an even sweeter one.
You’ll be doing something you’re passionate about and it’ll show in your work. I hope these ideas sparked a few of your own and if they did, I’d love to hear them. Fill out the comments below tell us about it! For more great ideas, visit the Home-Based Business section of this site.
